- Tell them where they are, and tell them they are safe.
- DO NOT TRY TO SLAP OR SHAKE THEM OUT OF IT. This can further trigger or frighten most people.
- Stay calm— getting hysterical won’t help. It is important to make them feel as safe as possible. Repeat their name, describe where you are and what is happening around you. (“John, you are safe. We are in the parking lot of the grocery store.”) This can help keep them grounded.
- Do not touch them if they don’t give you permission.
- Do not tell them to stop it— they can’t, or they already would have.
- Offer them gum, mints, or candy if you have any on hand— the flavor and feel in the mouth can help keep them in the present.
- DO NOT ask about what they are seeing or hearing in the flashback while it is happening. Instead, ask them about things in the present, what color shirt they are wearing, how many things around you that are blue, and so forth.
- Encourage them to touch something very tactile, a brick wall, fuzzy socks, their keys. Texture can help keep them in the present.
- When it is over, stay with them. Ask if they need you to call anyone, or (if you have the means) drive them somewhere.
- When it is over, offer to listen, but don’t push it if they say no.
- When it is over, most people want to retreat to a dark, enclosed space. Let them.
- When it is over, ask them if they need a hug. Firm hugs can help calm the nervous system. Don’t give them a hug if they say no.
